The Power of Music

Robin Spielberg, a renowned contemporary pianist and composer, tells a very personal story about the healing power of music. Her experiences inspired her to share how music makes an impact on our well-being and helps us through difficulties. Music therapy is an ancient and yet very modern practice that has the power to heal and transform our brains and bodies in significant ways. Kathleen Howland, speech language and music therapist explains how music really does have the power to heal our brain and heart. Themed Changing Currents, TEDxBerkleeValencia welcomes leading international innovators, entrepreneurs, creative business people, and artists from diverse countries representing music, fashion and design, the environment, technology and religion. The second edition of TEDxBerkleeValencia, which took place at L’Oceanogràfic, the largest aquarium in Europe, addressed several notions of change - paradigm shifts; movement, both physical and societal; and new tendencies across multiple disciplines. For the past 30+ years, she has worked with a variety of clinical populations using music to enhance speech, language, cognition and movement in habilitation and rehabilitation settings. Her doctoral studies in music and cognition have informed and supported her interest in bridging the communities of science and art in order to identify best practices. She teaches undergraduate and graduate courses at Berklee College of Music and the Boston Conservatory in music therapy, neuroscience and positive psychology. Researchers from the University of Geneva (UNIGE) and the University Hospitals of Geneva (HUG) demonstrate how music specially composed for premature infants strengthens the development of their brain networks and could limit the neurodevelopmental delays that often affect these children.

Jessica Grahn, Cognitive Neuroscientist, talks about the power of the human mind and how it can be transformed through music. Classically-trained flamenco fusion musician Andre Feriante presents healing music through an acoustic guitar performance and talk. This performance was given at TEDxSnoIsleLibraries 2016 in Edmonds, Washington. http://www.sno-isle.org/tedx Andre's career path was set at 13, when he first heard the flamenco guitar. He mastered the art and has blended it with classical and Brazilian styles. He has studied with Andres Segovia in Madrid, given a private performance at Carnegie Hall, and performed the National Anthem at a Seattle Sounders game. This concert performer has also released 14 albums. Andre is artistic director of Leavenworth's Guitar Euphoria Festival. Chris Pierce believes in the "healing powers of music". He was struck with a rare hearing disorder called Otosclerosis when in High School that led to the loss of hearing in one ear, a setback that would deter many young musicians forever. Since, Chris Pierce has shared worldwide stages with Seal, B.B. King, Al Green, Aaron Neville, Toots and the Maytals and many more refusing to let partial deafness to keep him from doing what he does loves the most, make music.
